Getting to Sausalito
If you fancy a boat ride over the bay, it’s worth taking the 30 minute ferry from San Francisco (either from the Ferry Building or Pier 41). It is also a picturesque drive over the Golden Gate Bridge on the 101N into Sausalito and there is convenient parking located near the city center. Beware though, parking does get harder as the day wears on so it’s best to arrive early. For more ideas on how to get to Sausalito (bike anyone?) click here.
Shopping and Dining in Sausalito
The ferry terminal in Sausalito will drop you into the heart of town, on Bridgeway, the main street. Here you can stroll through several boutiques, art galleries and souvenir shops. Check out Cha Cha Cha for some cute kids’ clothes and accessories.
If you want to sit down and have a meal, there is no shortage of options in Sausalito. Since seafood is a must, I recommend Horizons, which offers sea views and a kid-friendly vibe, and Spinnaker which is a little more upscale. Note: Sausalito is pretty expensive.
On a sunny day you will find people chillaxing all around the streets, enjoy some fish and chips or an ice-cream at Lappert’s. It’s a good place to let the kids out of the pram but mind you, it can get a little crowded.
All in all, a fun way to spend a day away from San Francisco, with beautiful views of the city.
Sausalito trivia: The Fleetwood Mac album Rumours was recorded here. Robin Williams currently resides in Sausalito.
