The Perfect Traveling Mom Outfit

The Perfect Traveling Mom Outfit

Traveling with kids, as we know, is no walk in the park. And neither is maintaining a sense of style when you are a mom and have to deal with body fluids and soiled fingerprints on an hourly basis. Still, fret not my friends: I believe I have found the ultimate matches in couture and practicality, mixing a little bit of designer with a whole of comfort and voila: you are the trendy supermom you thought existed only in your dreams (and fashion magazines).

Here are the elements of my travel uniform, the outfit I wear on every flight because I have found that it meets my needs for fashion, comfort, versatility and stain-proofing unlike any other combination in my wardrobe:

my-outfit-tightsAlice and Olivia Long Tubular Legging: Stretchy, comfy, versatile, and most important… BLACK! Spill anything on these puppies and I can wipe the evidence right off without anyone ever knowing! And sure, you must be thinking you can get a pair of leggings at Target at a fraction of the price but guaranteed they won’t last as long or be as opaque. (I would also do Lululemon.)

myoutfit1-wrapVictorias Secret Cotton Cashmere Wrap Sweater: I love this because it is soft and long, so that I can use it as a blanket to cover Karam’s legs one seat over if it’s a little chilly. The wrap element goes right around the neck so you don’t need a scarf which just ends up being one more thing to lug about, or risk ruining or losing. And the best part is at $49, I don’t feel terrible if it gets barfed on, I can just get another!

myoutfit3-tee Zara Cotton T-Shirt: Fitted enough to be stylish and loose enough to be comfy, Zara’s cotton t-shirts come in a variety of colors, prints and graphics. Plus they are long if you still have that baby fat hanging around your bum and thighs. I usually have at least 2 in my bag just in case.

myoutfit5-soxThorlo Crew Walking Socks: My husband got me onto these as he wears them for tennis and now I can’t go back. I tend to get very cold on my toes so I put these on as soon as I get on the flight for warmth, comfort and padded goodness. Plus they are so thick you don’t worry about what you are stepping on. (Think: airplane bathroom after 10 hours in air).

myoutfit4-bagMy Faithful Gucci Messenger Bag: Slings over my shoulder so my hands are free to deal with Karam and his stuff(!), this bag fits all I need: passports, wallet, sunglasses, ipad, and a small toilet kit with travel toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash, moisturizer, hairbrush and eyeliner. Neat!

myoutfit-shoesTory Burch Eddie Ballet Flat: The right footwear is essential, particularly if you are traveling with kids. You have to be comfortable and mobile so that you can dash after your brood as they jet from one corner of the airport to the other. But they also have to be stylish: you’re a mom, after all, not a hag! These shoes do it all and you’ll feel like you are walking on air, not just flying through it!
