Perfectly located on the Moika River Embankment, the Domina Prestige in St. Petersburg is a charming luxury boutique hotel. It’s walking distance from most of the major sites, located just around the corner from St. Isaac’s Cathedral. The lobby is striking with modern colors and an arched glass dome and the rooms are stylish and well appointed.
We had a junior suite with two large closets and bathrooms and which easily fit two rollaway beds in the living area. The bathrooms were updated and worked well, something you don’t find even in 5-star hotels in old cities such as St. Petersburg! And there’s always a special place in my heart for hotels that offer children’s robes and slippers! My only gripe with the room is that it wasn’t very bright but I think that’s because of the structure of the building, and our room was facing inwards.
The service overall was excellent. I found the concierge to be helpful but not completely thorough – for instance, when we planned our day at the Peterhoff Palace, she didn’t tell us that there were specific touring times for foreign tourists, which would have saved us a lot of time trying to figure out. That being said, she was kind enough to tell us that they charge a 40% commission on certain tickets and offered to help us book themselves with our credit card.
Like most boutique hotels in Europe, there is no gym. Breakfast was elegant (with champagne, of course), and the restaurant, even though I thought it was lacking in ambience, served an excellent meal. Russia is very kid-friendly so all restaurants offer a kids’ menu and some sort of entertainment – coloring, etc. There is also a bar that serves snacks and cocktails throughout the day.
All in all, I would high recommend a stay at Domina if you are visiting St. Petersburg. It’s not cheap, Russia is expensive and you’d pay what you expect for a five-star experience, but at the end of a long day sightseeing, it’s nice to come back to warm and competent staff, a clean room and a comfortable bed.
